EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, Nov. 29, 1777

* Battle of Brandywine Creek - Pennsylvania
* General George Washington defeated

Pages 1 and 2 have reports on debates in the House of Commons, which includes discussion on the situation in America, a few bits including: "...he took an extensive view of our American operations, he said that it was impossible they could answer in subduing the rebellion: That it was not in America as in Flanders, if you get possession of the towns the country was yours of course; but in America...the reverse was a fact: that a victorious army gains strength in its progress; whereas ours, even if their enterprizes succeed, only drag on a lengthened chain of posts which must so much weaken it as to terminate in its destruction...Why, found Washington so strongly posed in the Jerseys s to be obliged to embark the whole of his forces on board a fleet...to proceed by sea to Philadelphia instead of being able to cross the Delaware...making the ocean groan with the retreating British troops!..." and: "...that there were no grounds on which Great Britain and America might meet but unconditional submission."  and more (see).
Elsewhere are other reports: "...from New York...confirms the accounts of the total defeat of the rebels in there different engagements; in the last Washington lost all his artillery & above 4000 of his best troops, mostly killed, and that Gen. Howe took possession of Philadelphia the 15th of September....from Gen. Burgoyne to Gen. Clinton informing him that he had entirely routed Arnold's forces by flanking them at a time the rebel General was making dispositions to attack Burgoyne...the most dreadful carnage ensued in which many rebel officers, particularly Arnold, perished...". Also: "we learnt that Sir William Howe had defeated the rebels three times; first on the river Brandy-wine the 11th of September. Second the 15th by the river Schuylkill after which they took possession of Philadelphia being evacuated by the rebels...Lastly on the banks of the river Delaware totally with the loss of all their cloathing, baggage, magazines, cannon etc. Washington has fled into Jersey with the Congress & when they came away Howe, Erksine & Cornwallis were in pursuit...and General Clinton is gone into the Jerseys from New York...Gen. Burgoyne was entrenched at Saratoga a few miles from Albany..."
Four pages, folio size, bit close-trimmed at back leaf margin not affecting any mentioned reports, nice condition.
