THE WORLD, London, June 22, 1791  The top of page 3 has an article headed: "Boxing" "Mendoza and Ward" noting in part: "Set off yesterday...to fight on a 24 foot stage...The bets are nearly even; Mendoza was never in better condition. Just previous to their setting off they received information that the magistrates...had interfered to prevent the fight..." with more (see).
Mendoza was a famous Jewish boxer who transformed the English stereotype of a Jew from a weak, defenseless person into someone deserving of respect. He is said to have been the first Jew to talk to the King, George III. He was the British boxing champion from 1792-1795.
