Half of the front page is taken up with an interesting item which is prefaced with: "When the question of Independence was agitated in the American Congress, it was opposed by the Quakers & Proprietary Parties & by all the moderate people: However...the violent faction prevailed & the ruling party in the Congress have ever since looked with an evil eye on the Quakers...In order to ruin their party & to get possession of their effects the assembly of Pennsylvania have passed the following act." and the text of the Act reads: "An ACT obliging the male white inhabitants of this state to give assurance of allegiances to the same, & for other purposes therein mentioned." (see) Included within the text of the Act is the oath which was required, reading in part: "I____do swear or affirm that I renounce & refuse all allegiance to George the Third...and that I will be faithful & bear true allegiance to the commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a free and independent state..." with more (see).
Page 3 has a letter from Quebec which notes: "...I informed you of the success General Burgoyne had meet with by getting possession of Ticonderoga...he has received a check by the defeat of a foraging party of about 600 whom he sent out to Bennington, distant from Saratoga...They were met and attacked by between 3 and 4000 of the rebels & stood their ground for some time till finding themselves surrounded & overpowered..." with more on the details (see).
