Rumors about the war...

Item # 597528

August 02, 1777

EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, Aug. 2, 1777  Page 2 includes: "The last advices received from Gen. Howe...mention that he was then in motion with the main body of the army in the Jerseys to attack Philadelphia...consequently that the various reports of the defeat of Gen. Howe and Lord Cornwallis are without foundation....Notwithstanding all that has appeared in the papers about Gen. Howe and Ld. Cornwallis having been defeated, it is certain that...the news of a defeat by the way of Ireland is dated, & six days later than the news of the retreat of Gen. Howe's army in the Jerseys from Rhode Island...either these Irish and Rhode Island accounts must be false or the inhabitants of New York know of no such occurrences..." with more.
Page 3 has reports from the New York Gazette including: "...that a reconnoitering party from General Burgoyne's army had appeared about 2 miles northward of Ticonderoga...received intelligence by express from Mr. Gates importing that the main body of general Burgoyne's army was then at the mouth of Otter Creek...that two men were lately hanged at Hartford, two at Norwich, one at Newhaven, and one at Newton, in Connecticut, for enlisting men for the service of their Sovereign...the rebels were confining every man whom they suspected to be friendly to government."
Four pages, folio size, period notation in ads & margins, very nice condition.
