New York City is set afire... John Hancock... Pardon for deserters...

EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, Nov. 16, 1776

The front page has a report datelined: "In Congress, Philadelphia, July 27" and signed in type by: John Hancock, President, which begins: "The General Congress having been informed that Major Butterfield agreed to surrender the fort & garrison at the Cedars, consisting of 390 continental troops...on condition that the garrison should not be put into the hands of the savages...That the shameful surrender of the post at the Cedars is  chargeable on the commanding officer..." with more (see).
Page 2 has some Revolutionary War content including: "Though government has received no advices of General Burgoyne's progress in the expedition over the Lakes, yet it is generally believed, & was the current report at Quebec when the last ship sailed..." with more (see).
Page 3 has a nice account of the great fire in New York City, beginning: "On Saturday the 21st...we had a terrible fire in this city which consumed about one thousand houses or near a fourth of the whole city. The following is the best account we can collect of this melancholy event..." and what follows is a very detailed account of it (see). This is followed by a: "Proclamation" which notes in part: "Whereas there are many deserters from his Majesty's service now in arms in America against their rightful sovereign & engaged with the declared enemies of Great Britain in a most cruel & unnatural rebellion...hereby offer a full pardon to all such deserters who shall surrender themselves at the head quarters..." signed in type: W. Howe. This is followed by another letter from New York concerning the war (see).
