October 16, 1776

EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, Oct. 16, 1776

* Battle of Long Island - Brooklyn
* George Washington vs. William Howe

Over half of the first column on the front page is taken up with a continuation of: "An Authentic Journal of Occurrences which happened within the Circle of Major Meig's Observation, in the Detachment commanded by Colonel (now General) Benedictine [sic] Arnold", which is concluded in a future issue (see our item 596691, or inquire).
Page 2 has some items concerning the Revolutionary war including congratulations to: "...his Majesty on the success of his arms in America..." and: "...from Lord Howe which brought advice that the inhabitants of Rhode Island, which are computed at 35,000, had declared in favour of Great Britain; & that Mr. Harrison...had taken possession of the Pentagon fort at Newport...". Plus there is some content relating to the Battle of Long Island: "...letter from a merchant at Long Island mentions that there is plenty of provisions upon that spot; & that the inhabitants have received the British troops with open arms being convinced they are likely to gain much more by the residence of the army amongst them than they have lost by the obstruction of their trade...The Rose...is gone into the East River to cover the passage of the troops...Gen. Washington is ready to receive us on the other side...he & his masters are undone if they hazard a battle, for our troops are so brave & so inveterate that the rebels lose ten to one in every skirmish..." with more.
Plus there is a nice page 2 letter from an officer dated near New Town, Long Island, Sept. 5 which begins: "It is with much pleasure I acquaint you with one great success against the rebels in an action on the 27th of last month in the woods near Flat Bush and Bedford. Our loss has been very trifling in comparison to theirs..." with more on the details of the Battle of Long Island (see). And there is yet another letter from a person in the army, also dated from Long Island on September 5 which has some details of the battle.
Page 3 has over a full column taken up with 3 letters which offer various details on the Battle of Long Island (see).
A great and historic issue. Four pages, folio size, red tax stamp on the front page, light dirtiness to the top of the front page, otherwise in very nice condition.
