May 11, 1861
DAILY DISPATCH, Richmond, Virginia, May 11, 1861 A nice newspaper from the capital of the Confederacy (or where it soon would be). The front page includes: "The Position of Maryland" "From Washington" "From Norfolk" "Local Matters--Richmond as the Confederate Capital" "Guerrilla Warfare" and other items, including two illustrated runaway slave ads (see).
Inside has an interesting editorial which begins: "At this moment when the cloud of war is darkening over the land, & the ear is strained to catch on every Northern breeze 'the clash of resounding army..." with much more. Also: "Declaration of War" which begins: "The Southern Confederacy has picked up the gauntlet that Lincoln has thrown down & answered his threats with a declaration of war..."; "The South In Army" and many other items.
Four pages, irregular at the spine with a bit of loss, generally nice condition.
