April 13, 1812
INDEPENDENT CHRONICLE, Boston, Massachusetts, April 13, 1812
* Embargo Act
* War of 1812 prelude
Most of the middle column of the front page is taken up with: "AN ACT Laying an Embargo on all the Ships & Vessels in the Ports & Harbors of the United States, for a Limited Time" which would be a prelude to a war with England. It is signed in type by the President: James Madison (see photos). Another Act of Congress on the ftpg. as well, also signed by Madison. The embargo was very controversial, as there were sentiments that it would be as harmful to American business interests as British. Great to have this very historic Act on the front page.
Four pages, very nice condition.
