The top of the first column has: "Proclamation By the President of the Confederate States" signed in type: Jefferson Davis. The theme is on learning from the lessons of the recent Battle of Gettysburg, with religious overtones: "...Let us rather receive in humble thankfulness this lesson which He has taught in our recent reverses...when trial and reverses befall us we should ask to take home to our hearts & consciences the lessons which they teach..." with more. He sets aside Aug. 21 as a day of fasting, humiliation and prayer (see photos).
Following this is a lengthy letter signed by: R. E. Lee, General, headed: "The 'Prisoners, Cannon & Arms' Claimed by Gen. Meade at Falling Waters--Official Denial of Its Truth by General Lee" which relates to the aftermath of Gettysburg. Also: "The Army of Northern Virginia" following Gettysburg. More war-related content on the front page.
The back page includes: "...Morgan's raid and Lee's invasion are both great gains of the South...While the return of Lee to Virginia & the sudden abandonment of one of the most magnificent campaigns ever planned is still an inexplicable event, an apparent inconsequence what he did & the point he reached, furnish solid material for hope & a glorious model for future imitation...", which is an attempt to put a positive spin on their defeat at Gettysburg.
Also: "The Siege & Fall of Port Hudson--Interesting Particulars" and "The Situation In Mississippi" plus other war-related content.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, folio size with a full banner masthead, very nice condition.
