* Andy Rooney 1st correspondence

With the front page headlines announcing the Allied forces advancing further into Germany during the closing weeks of the war, the big story is actually found on page 12 with a lengthy single column head: "300 Burned Alive By Retreating SS" "U.S. Writer Describes Scene of Inferno, Laid in Placid German Community" "Survivor Tells Story" "Allied Captives Huddled Into Building Drenched with Inflammable Material".

This lengthy article has the account of Andy Rooney (of 60 Minutes fame), then a reporter for "Stars and Stripes" and the first American correspondent in the concentration camps. This report is one of the first to appear in American newspapers exposing the atrocities of the Nazi plan for extermination of the Jews (see for portion). Included also are two related photos, one headed: "They Survived Nazi Atrocities In Germany".
