This issue has content relating to the Whiskey Rebellion in Western Pennsylvania. This was a tax protest by farmers who sold their grain in the form of whiskey. The Whiskey Rebellion demonstrated that the new national government had the willingness and ability to suppress violent resistance to its laws.
On the front page taking most of the first two columns, is a notice from a gentleman named Thomas Paine (not the famous one) announcing his intent to publish a newspaper called the Federal Orrery (offered elsewhere on our website). Page 2 has "A Proclamation" issued by the governor concerning an act of intimidation upon an officer residing in "Morgan Town" by what was believed to be certain "banditti" from Western Pennsylvania, with mention that all officials should use their resources to seize the perpetrators, signed in type: Henry Lee. This is concerning the Whiskey Rebellion, as is another pg. 2 item headed "Pennsylvania" which includes a "Circular" signed in type by Joseph Harmar, Adj. General of the Penna. militia (see).
