December 20, 1780

THE EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, December 20, 1780

* Lord Charles Cornwallis & General Benedict Arnold

Fully one-third of the front page is taken up with a lengthy & notable: "Proclamation" signed in type by: Cornwallis, from not long after his victory over General Gates at Camden, South Carolina, concerning: "...his Majesty's unparalleled clemency to those of his deluded subjects who, from a sense of their errors, have returned to their duty & allegiance, there are several persons of property in this province who obstinately persist in their guilty & treasonable practices & are either in the service or acting under the authority of the Rebel Congress..." (see for portions).
Page 2 has a follow-up item on the treasonous Benedict Arnold affair: "...from New York that General Clinton has received a letter from General Washington...informing him that General Arnold's lady & family should be delivered up on the same number of American officers being exchanged for them, to which General Clinton had agreed..." (see photos). Page 2 also has a letter from New York with much war-related reports including: "...when General Gates arrived at Philadelphia...he acquainted the Congress that unless an army as numerous as that under the command of General Washington was sent to the Carolinas immediately all was over in that quarter of the continent." with other news concerning events in the South (see photos).
Four pages, folio size, bit of light dirtiness, nice condition.
