THE BOSTON GAZETTE & COUNTRY JOURNAL, April 26, 1773
* Rare Paul Revere Engraving
One of the prime features of this issue is the engraving in the masthead. Not only is it a nice political statement--showing the dove of peace being set free from its "cage" by the Liberty figure with the skyline of Boston in the background--but it was engraved by Paul Revere.
Page 2 has a bit beginning: "Governor Hutchinson is in high estimation amongst the most sensible men here...". Page 3 has a letter which includes: "The people in the country have observed of late an unusual silence among the Tories; even Draper's paper, the vehicle for Toryism, has been contained many libels against Liberty & the People...but we hear...that the miserable Tories begin to fire their Pop-guns again; however the thunder of the artillery of American freedom will soon silence the poor wretches..." with more (see photos).
Other news of the day and a nice variety of advertisements, including a lengthy front page notice for the "Harvard College Lottery".
Four pages, never-trimmed margins, rejoined at the spine & slightly irregular at the spine, two small tape mends inside. Generally in nice condition. A great opportunity for the desirable Paul Revere engraving.
