Page 439 of this issue carries the report of the death of Choctaw Chief Hummingbird, also known as General Hummingbird. "Died, on the 23d December, at his residence near the Choctaw agency, general Hummingbird, a Choctaw chief, a the advanced age of 75... a great friend to the United States, and has fought many battles with the red people in behalf of our government... This noted war chief received a commission and silver medal from general Washington, which were interred in the coffin with his remains at the request of his friends."
The sudden death of Governor De Witt Clinton, New York, is reported within this issue as well. Other articles within the issue are: United States and Brazil; New Tariff Bill which is takes over six pages; Pittsburg - the expansion of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad to that city; and many additional articles.
This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
