July 22, 1861

DAILY DISPATCH, Richmond, Virginia, July 22, 1861  A nice newspaper from the capital of the Confederate States of America. The front page has a nearly two column: "MESSAGE of PRESIDENT DAVIS" to the Confederate Congress, signed by him in type: Jefferson Davis. This is followed by: "The Recent Flag of Truce form President Davis to Abraham Lincoln" which is also signed: Jefferson Davis. Also on the front page are: "The Fiendishness of Lincoln's Hirelings" "From Norfolk" "By the Governor of Virginia--A Proclamation" & other war-related items.
But the best content is found on page 3, lead by an editorial note headed: "Terrific Fight at Manassas! " "Victory Again Perches On Our Banner" which begins: "Yesterday was a day long to be remembered in the annals of Richmond...On inquiry, we ascertained that when the cars left Manassas...heavy firing was heard in the vicinity of Bull's Run, about 2 miles from that place...The Lincoln army was completely routed. Hampton's Legion suffered considerable loss. Sherman's celebrated Battle of Light Artillery was taken by our troops. The fight was very severe and fatal on both sides..." and it concludes with: "...The following dispatch was received by Mrs. President Davis late last evening: 'We have won a glorious but dear bought victory--the night closed with the enemy in full flight, pursued by our troops. Jeff Davis.' "
This is then followed by: "The Fight At Manassas, Thursday - Further Particulars" with a dateline of "Bull's Run, July 19, 1861" which takes over a full column with much details, and which includes other dispatches datelined "Staunton, July 19", "Manassas Junction, July 19". Plus page 2 has a very nice editorial headed: "The Great Victory" which concerns the Battle of Bull's Run, or Manassas. There is also editorial comment concerning: "The President's Message", with other reports headed: "Army Matters" "Camp Items" "Old Kentucky" "From Cairo" "The Secessionists in the Northwest" and other smaller items, including an illus. runaway slave ad.
Complete in 4 pages and in very nice condition. Not only is it great to have a report on the significant Battle of Bull Run in a Confederate newspaper, but a very early report with the top of page 3 reporting on the events of just the day prior to the publication date.
