WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, May 29, 1863

* Rare Confederate newspaper from the Civil War

This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era.
Almost the entire ftpg. is taken up with Civil War news, with items headed: "The Thirteenth N. C. Regiment", "Latest News From the North" which includes a report from Fredericksburg of May 19; "Death of a Brave Man" which is concerning Lieut. Gambrill of Mississippi, a Confederate scout; "What It Costs the North", "Gen. Jackson's Remains" and other items.
More than half of pg. 2 is taken up with: "The News" which has a wide variety of war-related content. Also on pg. 2: "A Yankee Letter" and "Gallant Conduct".  Pg. 3 has almost an entire column headed: "Vicksburg" (see photos for portions) and also: "Northern Items" and a few other war-related item.
The back page has nearly a full column: "Proclamation" by the governor of North Carolina concerning deserters & those who protect them. Also a "$420 Reward" ad for a deserter from the war, plus other items.
There are 2 very small holes in the front leaf, light damp staining in the upper right, and an ink stain on the front leaf. An opportunity for not only a very rare Confederate title, but one with some fine content.
