THE CRISIS, Columbus, Ohio, Sept. 9, 1863 The front page contains a small item reading in part: "Abraham Lincoln & his followers are in a big war with the South--to this they are going to add a war with France, a war with England & at the same time get up a war with the Democrats of the North! A big job that yet abolition fools talk about it as a very easy work & sure to succeed." The ftpg. also has a lengthy: "President Lincoln's Letter--A Plain Statement at his Position--He Maintains the Emancipation Policy--How a Compromise Can be Effected--The Employment of Negro Soldiers" with the letter signed in type: A Lincoln, and taking over a full column.
Items inside include: "The Fiendish Massacre by Negro Soldiers Near Island Ten." "Four Confederacies" "Perpetual War--President Lincoln's Letter" takes 1 1/2 columns; "Bravery of Colored Troops" "The Correspondence Between Beauregard & Gilmore" includes a very long letter signed: G. T. Beauregard.
Eight pages, great condition.
Described as "The Hottest Rebel Sheet to be found in the North or the South", this newspaper opposed the war and attracted the hatred of the Republicans and the Lincoln administration. It insisted that slavery could not be prohibited by law. So obnoxious was this paper to Unionists that it was denied circulation in some cities. In 1863 the press was raided by a hateful mob.
