July 28, 1781

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, July 28, 1781  Inside has an interesting letter beginning: "It is said but too frequently that America cannot be looked upon properly as in rebellion, because resistance in some cases may be legal..." with much more, including: "To revolt & rebellion they have added conspiracy. I always wished them relief against taxation by our Parliament..." with the full text seen in the photos below. Over two-thirds of a page has Revolutionary War reports including: "Extract of a Letter from General Greene's Hqts., Col. Ramsay's, Deep River" with the text including: "...we found the enemy had crossed some hours before our arrival & with such precipitation that they left their dead unburied on the ground...The enemy are on the route to Cross Creek & Wilmington. From undoubted information we learn the enemy's loss in the battle at Guilford amounted to 633...Nothing but blood & slaughter has prevailed among the Whigs & Tories & their inveteracy against each other much, if it continues, depopulate this part of the country..." with more on the war action. This same page has reports from "Newport, Rhode Island" and an "Extract of a Letter from Camp" plus a document from the Mass. legislature which is signed in type by John Hancock, among others. Also an "Extract of a Letter from West Point" and a report from "Norwich" (see for full text).
Another page has a report headed "America" with news from New Jersey, including: "This country is not to be reduced to obedience by arms; it must be done by an interest in Congress & getting a majority there...the inhabitants of that fertile country have rapidly become very numerous & call themselves independent..." with more (see photos).
Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 inches, nice condition.
