THE COMMERCIAL APPEAL, Memphis, Tennessee, April 16, 1912 This issue is one of the better reports we have offered on what is perhaps the most famous tragedy of the 20th century: the sinking of the Titanic.
The bold banner headline proclaims: "TITANIC SINKS; 1294 DROWNED" with a banner subhead announcing some of the notables who were on the ship: "John Jacob Astor, Major Archibald Butt, Benjamin Guggenheim, J.D. Widener, Isadore Straus, C. M. Hays, Washington Roebling and W. T. Stead Reported to Have Gone Down With the Ship".
There are also one column headlines which report some details as known at this early date: "Greatest Atlantic Liner Destroyed By Huge Iceberg" "Appalling Disaster Happens 500 Miles From Cape Race" "Women Alone Are Saved" "Vessel Disappears Four Hours After collision" "Was Her Maiden Voyage" "Ships Hurrying to Leviathan's Rescue See Her Sink" "866 Passengers Rescued" (see).
Just below the large headline on the front page is a nice photo of the Titanic headed: "Mammoth Titanic Which Struck Iceberg on Maiden Voyage" as well as a photos of the captain: "Capt. E. J. Smith", and a map of the vicinity headed: "Where Titanic Met Disaster". The front page also includes the list of the: "First-Class Passengers On the New Leviathan" and also a list of: "Some of Those Who Escaped a Watery Grave". Other subheads as well, including: "Greatest Atlantic Liner Destroyed By Huge Iceberg". Inside has some photos showing the lavishness of the interior of the Titanic, and a photo of J. Bruce Ismay, "One of the Saved of Titanic Passengers" and others.
Complete in 18 pages, cleanly loose at the spine with ample spine margin, browned at the margins, some chipping at margins of interior pages and a few mends to margins of interior pages. A dramatic & displayable issue with this front page containing the words wanted by every collector: "Titanic Sinks".
