January 10, 1771

PENNSYLVANIA JOURNAL & THE WEEKLY ADVERTISER, Philadelphia, January 10, 1771  One of the largest & most decorative mastheads of the 18th century (see). The front page has a declaration noting that deserters from his Majesty's ships will be given pardon if they return to their posts (see). Page 2 has a report from Charleston noting: "...holding a congress with Col. Donaldson...& the Cherokee Indians. All the principal head-men & chiefs attended. The number of Indians present was upwards of a thousand. We hear the boundary line between Virginia & the Cherokees, which was the principal object of the congress, is settled to the satisfaction of all concerned."
Page 3 has reports from Newport, New York, & Philadelphia, the latter including mention that the American Philosophical Society, at its recent meeting, selected as: "...President, Benjamin Franklin, Esq., L.L. D...". Page 3 also has several reward ads including on "Ten Dollars Reward - A Pale mulatto man (a Slave for life) named Joe..." plus others.
Four pages, scattered foxing, a bit irregular at the spine margin but generally  in nice condition.
