January 01, 1912

TUCUMCARI SUN, New Mexico. 1912 A quite uncommon title from this New Mexico town, and great to have from the same year New Mexico became a state. Nice condition. Image shown is representative of the issue you will see. Actual dates/issues vary within 1912.
Note: The town of Tucumcari, located on the old Route 66 (now Rt. 40) has an interesting history and has been mentioned often in popular culture (Rain Man, NCIS, Designing Women, Adam-12, For a Few Dollars More, Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, etc.). The town was also the on-site location for many scenes of the show Rawhide, staring Clint Eastwood.
Background (Wiki): In 1901, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built a construction camp in the western portion of modern-day Quay County. Originally called Ragtown, the camp became known as Six Shooter Siding, due to numerous gunfights. Its first formal name, Douglas, was used only for a short time. After it grew into a permanent settlement, it was renamed Tucumcari in 1908. The name was taken from Tucumcari Mountain, which is situated near the community. Where the mountain got its name is uncertain. It may have come from the Comanche word tʉkamʉkarʉ, which means 'ambush'.
