February 24, 1947

EVENING CHRONICLE, Allentown, Pennsylvania, February 24, 1947

* Black Dahlia murders
* Elizabeth Short
* Hollywood - Los Angeles CA

This 24 page newspaper has a one column headline on the front page: "HORROR MURDER THIRD IN MONTH IN LOS ANGELES" which tells of more similar murders taking place in Los Angeles, California shortly after Elizabeth Short's murder. Nice to have on the front page.

Other news, sports and advertisements of the day including frontpage reports on the sentence of Nazi leader Franz Von Papen and a small article and photo of Charles "Lucky" Luciano as he was arrested in Havana (see images).

Small binding holes along the spine, otherwise in good condition.

wikipedia notes: Joseph Dumais, a 29-year-old soldier stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, confessed to the murder a few weeks after it occurred. Although this "breakthrough" was quickly dismissed by the original investigators, the Los Angeles press covered it enthusiastically until it was revealed that Dumais had been at Fort Dix at the time of the murder. Dumais was cleared of any involvement in the crime, although he continued to claim he killed Elizabeth Short each time he was arrested for various offenses, well into the 1950s.
