October 01, 1934

THE NEW YORK TIMES, October 1, 1934.

* Babe Ruth ends career with New York Yankees
* Negro baseball league - early Satchel Paige

This 36 newspaper has two column headline on page 22:

* Ruth Makes Last Bow as Regular as Senators Top Yankees, 5-3
* Crowd of 15,000 in Washington Honors Baseball's Idol as He Ends 21 Glamorous Years on the Diamond--Gehrig Hits 49th Homer and Wins League Batting Championship

with box scores. Historic report as this was Babe Ruth's very last game played with the Yankees. Great to have in this famed NYC title.

Also of interest is a report on the same page of a Negro baseball league game involving the New York Black Yankees and the Pittsburgh Crawfords. See photos for this report and notice in the box scores a pitcher with the last name of Paige. This is indeed Satchel Paige, many years prior to him entering MLB.

Other news of the day. The front page of this issue is totally damaged with tape mends and a few large pieces missing. A few other small tape mends within with little margin wear, otherwise good condition.
