THE LONDON GAZETTE, October 15, 1688  This was from the time of the "Glorious Revolution" in England, when the Catholic throne of James II was being threatened by the Dutch Protestant William of Orange, who ultimately, along with his British wife, Mary Stuart, would soon become joint British sovereigns William and Mary.
The front page begins with the king in a conciliatory mood with: "The King having declared His Resolution to preserve the Church of England in all its rights & Immunities..." with more (see). This is followed by an address by the city of Exeter, pledging their allegiance to the King in the coming crisis noting in part: "...your Majesties most  dutiful and Loyal subjects...do at this time, when your Majesty hath declared you have received undoubted advice of an invasion to be made on the these your Majesties Kingdoms...in duty and allegiance we are bound...for the preservation of your Majesties government, we shall always be ready to stand by and assist your Majesty with our lives and fortunes against all your enemies..." with more (see). This is followed by a similar letter of support from the citizens of Carlisle (see).
Ultimately James II would lose the support of his friends & of Parliament and with the arrival of William of Orange he escaped to France, allowing William & Mary to take the throne.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper in very nice, clean condition. This is the world's oldest, continually published newspaper having begun in 1665 and is still publishing today. It is also the newspaper which was the mouthpiece of Parliament and all royal news, making this perhaps the best newspaper to have with this content.
