October 31, 1778

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, Oct. 31, 1778

* Newport RI Rhode Island

Certainly the most significant content takes over a full page and is headed: "American News" "The REBEL Account of the late Affair of RHODE ISLAND" which begins with a prefacing note: "Extract of a Letter from Gen. Washington to Congress, dated Head-quarters, White plains, Sept. 1, 1778" and reads: "I do myself the honour of transmitting to you a copy of a letter I this minute received from general Sullivan. I congratulate congress on the repulse of the enemy." What follows is a letter signed in type: John Sullivan, which is then followed by a much lengthier letter signed in type by John Sullivan to Congress in which he details the Battle of Rhode Island (see for portions).
Page 2 has a report which includes: "...that General Clinton has wrote to the Ministry that he wants only his present regiments to be complete & that he is in no apprehension for the safety of New York or Rhode Island." This is followed by a: "List of the principal Officers killed and taken by the Americans in the Eagle packet." (see).
Plus there is even more war-related content, including a back page report headed "America" which begins: "...just returned from the Susquehanna informs us that Col. Butler, after defeating the rebels at Wyoming...left a detachment of his army at Wyoming to take care of the harvest, that a skirmish  had happened between the said detachment & some rebels..." with much more (see for potions).
Eight pages, 8 1/4 by 11 inches, very nice, clean condition.
