1st U.S. airmail flight... John Wise...

Item # 580651

August 25, 1859

THE NEW YORK TIMES, August 25, 1859  This 8 page newspaper has a very significant report on the back page concerning the very 1st airmail delivery for the United Post Office by balloonist John Wise.

Small headings near the bottom of page 8 read: "Mr. Wise's Last balloon Ascension" and "Scientific Observations In Mid-Air". See photos for text. A few printing flaws causes minor text loss as seen in the photos.

Other news of the day including a pre Civil War baseball game on page 5. Nice condition.

wikipedia notes: John Wise (24 February 1808 – 28 September 1879?) was a pioneer in the field of ballooning. He made over 400 flights during his lifetime and was responsible for several innovations in balloon design. Among the things Wise is famous for was when his balloon, The Jupiter carried 123 letters and made the first official airmail delivery run for the US Post Office in August of 1859.
