March 29, 1930

MEMPHIS EVENING APPEAL, Tennessee, March 29, 1930

* Post stock market crash of 1929
* Great Depression at the beginning

This 14 page newspaper has a fantastic six column headline on the front page: "STOCK MARKET HITS NEW SALES RECORD" with subheads (see photos). Nice to have this report on the front page and very unusual for such a nice headline here as well. Nice for display.

Other news of the day including period advertising. Light browning with little margin wear and chipping, little irregular at the spine, otherwise good.

wikipedia notes: During the Sherman Riot of 1930 (May 9, 1930), Sherman's elegant second courthouse was burned down by arson during the trial of the black man George Hughes. During the riot, Hughes was locked in the vault at the courthouse and died in the fire. After rioters retrieved Hughes' body from the vault, it was dragged behind a car, hung, and set afire. Texas Ranger Frank Hamer was in Sherman during this riot and reported the situation to Texas Governor Dan Moody. Governor Moody sent National Guard troops to Sherman on May 9 and more on May 10 to control the situation.
