THE HANGMAN, Boston, Sept. 24, 1845

* Very rare pre Civil War title
* Capital punishment - hangings


A volume one issue of a quite rare anti-capital punishment  newspaper by J. N. Bang. This title existed for only one year, continuing thereafter as "The Prisoner's Friend".
On the front page is: "The Expediency of Capital Punishment  Considered" "Meeting for the Abolition of Capital Punishment in England" and "Blood! Blood!! BLOOD!!! ". Page 3 includes: "Meetings on Capital Punishment" & "Confessions of Greene" and "To the Friends of Humanity. There si also a section titled: "Under Sentence of Death!" which has black borders above & below it, noting the fate of 11 people to be executed, including: "...a slave for engaging in an insurrection..." and "Babe, the pirate..." and "Pauline, the slave..." among others (see). Also on pg. 3: "Philadelphia Society for Promoting the Abolition of Capital Punishment"
Complete as a four page newspaper, measures 12 1/2 by 17 1/4 inches, nice condition.
