DAILY EXAMINER, Richmond, Virginia, October 8, 1863

* Battle of Gettysburg
* Eyewitness account

Not only a nice Confederate newspaper, but one from the capital of the Confederacy. The front page starts out with: "The War" with several reports from various fronts. There is also much reporting from: "The Virginia Legislature" and "The Courts" & "City Intelligence". There is also: "Telegraphic News" from Gordonsville, and "From Bragg's Army" datelined Missionary Ridge, beginning: "We opened upon Chattanooga at 1 o'clock from Lookout mountain & other points along our line, our shells exploding in the enemy's camps as well as in the city..." (see) There is a follow-up: "Second Dispatch" and other reports headed: "Fight Near New Albany" "From Charleston" "From New Orleans" and "Georgia Elections".
Certainly the prime feature of the back page is an outstanding eye-witness account of the Battle of Gettysburg but a report who was "embedded" in the Confederate army and had face-to-face conversations with General Lee & others. This is the man's diary which takes 2 1/2 columns, with daily accounts from June 30 through July 6. It is headed: "Gettysburg--An Interiour View" and has a prefacing paragraph: "Although no Southern newspaper is permitted to send a correspondent into a Confederate army, the newspaper correspondents of any other country are not only received there, but freely admitted into the councils of the generals. "Blackwood's Magazine" [London] was represented at Gettysburg  by a writer who publishes his diary in the September number of that publication. His account of the march, battle & retreat is very long, and is interesting because of the intelligence he derived from headquarters. We condense some portions of it:..." and what follows are portions from his diary. Truly terrific, detailed reporting from a perspective not gained by anyone else. Far too much great material for me to list here, so see the photos. Terrific to find this account in a newspaper from the capital of the Confederacy. The full text of this reporter's coverage of the battle can be viewed by clicking on Blackwood's Magazine.
Single sheet with a full banner masthead, never bound nor trimmed with wide margins, a few archival mends to the right edge of the bkpg. cause no loss, generally in very nice condition.
