THE HANGMAN, Boston, September 3, 1845

* Capital punishment - hangings

A volume one issue of a quite rare anti-capital punishment  newspaper by J. N. Bang. This title existed for only one year, continuing thereafter as "The Prisoner's Friend".

On the front page is: "Scotch Antipathy Towards The Hangman", "Prison at New Bedford--Mrs. McFarlin" and "The Law of Kindness Vs. the Law of Force". Page 2 features a print of: "Orrin De Wolf" with text which begins: "Good News !  Three Cheers ! The life of Orrin De Wolf is saved!...Now we have seen accomplished what we had so ardently desired; but we must not rest here. The hideous gallows must never be built again..." with more. There are other articles relating to Orrin De Wolf.

Page 3 has various tidbits under: "All Sorts" and also an interesting half column headed: "Under Sentence of Death ! " (see photos). The back page, has; "Execution of Carter &I Parke for the Murder of the Castner Family" and "Murderers In the Massachusetts State Prison".

Complete with four page newspaper, measures about 12 1/2 by 17 1/4 inches, and in nice condition.
