* Rare antebellum newspaper with incredible slave advertisement

The first newspaper in all of Randolph county was this one, having begun on Dec. 31, 1836 and ending around 1844. In 34 years of dealing in rare newspapers this is the first time this title has come into our inventory.
Like most newspapers of the day it carries a wide range of content, from news of the day to literary items to various advertisements. Among the articles are: "Duel Fighting" "The Duel" "Health Report For February" "Marshall College" and more.
Perhaps the best feature of this issue is the uncommonly large  back page illustrated ad for: "$50 Reward Take up the Runaway!...A MAN SLAVE..." with various details.  The type is larger than normal, and rarely did they use the world "slave" in the ads, plus the illustration is much larger than normal. Fortunately damage to other portions of the issue do not affect this ad.
A damaged issue as a small piece is clipped from the upper right corner of the front leaf, various tears at the edges with some loss to the lower left, some old tape mends, and various foxing & damp staining. Nonetheless a very rare title from the antebellum South.
