Item # 572072

September 24, 1919

THE NEW YORK WORLD, New York, September 24, 1919

* Steel strike of 1919
* Riots in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

This 28 page newspaper has a three line banner headline on the front page: "STEEL STRIKE SHUTS MORE MILLS, DEADLOCK UNBROKEN; 4 NEW DEATHS, MANY WOUNDED, IN RIOTS WITH POLICE; SENATE BEGINS INQUIRY AT ONCE INTO CAUSE OF DISPUTE" with many subheads. (see)

Other news of the day. Light browning with little margin wear, mostly along spine, otherwise good.

wikipeida notes: The Steel Strike of 1919 was an attempt by the weakened Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers (the AA) to organize the United States steel industry in the wake of World War I. The strike began on September 22, 1919, and collapsed on January 8, 1920.

The AA had formed in 1876. It was a union of skilled iron and steel workers which was deeply committed to craft unionism. However, technological advances had slashed the number of skilled workers in both industries.
