Although this newspaper was published in present-day Maine, at the time it was part of Massachusetts, not joining the union until 1820 when it was part of the Missouri Compromise. This is one of the earliest "Maine" newspapers we have offered. Pages 2 & 3 contains the famous letter by George Washington to his officers angry over the failure of Congress to honor its promises to the army regarding salary, bounties and life pensions. It is dated March 15, 1783 and signed by him in type: George Washington (see).
Four pages, archival repairs & strengthening at the margins and across both the vertical & horizontal folds but causing no loss of readability.
