DAILY EXAMINER, Richmond, Virginia, Dec. 28, 1864 Not just a Confederate newspaper from very late in the war, but one from the capital of the Confederate through which all important war news flowed.
The front page includes: "The War News" which includes various subheads including: "Wilmington" "Letter which is a dispatch signed by: Braxton Bragg (see); and: "From Georgia" talks of Sherman's movements and includes: "...Sherman has already followed up the occupation of Savannah by sending a force of cavalry, artillery & infantry...Sherman's programme for his grand campaign northward seems to be no secret. He will start from Port Royal & move straight on Branchville...He then proposes to follow the main lines of railroad towards Virginia, stealing and murdering as much as he can by the way..." (see). Other war-related items as well.
The back page has a lengthy editorial which focuses on the draft to gain more troops, both in the North and the South. Reference is made to the northern draft as: "...the workmen & labourers are told that they must not expect to elude the remorseless power that is ready at any tie to drive them from their homes, like so many sheep marked for the butcher's knife..." and more. Under: "Latest News Frm the North" are various subheads including: "From Grant's Army" "All Citizens in New Orleans to be Disarmed" "Prisoner's Transferred to Fort Warren" "The Yankee Congress" "Movements of Blockade-Runners" "Votes for President in the North" shows Lincoln defeating McClellan in the vote count (see). There are also two letters written by Confederate soldiers.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a one column masthead, typical from the South at this late stage of the war as paper was scarce. Some dirtiness near the middle of the back page only, otherwise in great condition.
