DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, Jan. 4, 1862  Not only a nice Confederate newspaper, but from the capital of the Confederacy as well.
Half of the front page is taken up with various advertisements while the other half has reports on: "The Mason-Slidell Arrest" "Back-Down of the Lincoln Government" "Surrender of the Commissioners & an Apology to the British Flag" with more. This coverage carries over to page 2.
Page 2 has a lengthy editorial which, in part, exploits the Mason-Slidell affair, beginning: "Behold this day the suicide of Seward! The correspondence between that once famous & now infamous individual & the British minister in the annals of diplomacy: it will live forever as an illustration of the sublime & cowardice & knavery and pitifulness..." with more (see for portions). Also on pg. 2: "A Parallel of History" "The Latest Northern News--Movements and Spirit of the War" "The Government & the Speculators" "License to Traitors and Spies" and a bit more.
The war news carry over to page 3 where is found: "Departure of a Distinguished Yankee" "The Building of the New Gunboats" "City Intelligence" as well as: "Telegraphic News" which has subheads: "Later & Important From the North" "The War on the Sea Coast--The Yankees of Fort Royal Attempt to Advance But are Driven Back" "Hostilities Renewed at Pensacola" "Affairs in Kentucky" and a bit more.
Complete in 4 pages, a piece missing from the bottom left margin affects some text but not to any mentioned items. Otherwise never bound nor trimmed and in nice condition.
