December 14, 1780
THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, December 14, 1780

* John Paul Jones : Major John Andre : Benjamin Franklin

Most of the front page is taken up with number two of "Letters from Cicero to Catiline the Second" which has various reverences to America (see for portions). Page 2 has an item containing: "...nothing more than a confirmation of the high spirits of the British troops in Carolina & the declining state of the rebel force..." and also mention of John Paul Jones with a brief item beginning: "Paul Jone's ship that sailed from hence with a convoy of 15 sail for America, & returned to this port dismasted...is now ready for sea..." with a bit more (see). Printing fold in this report causes no loss of readability.
Another page is taken up in its entirety with interesting reports from America, including nearly two columns on a report from Savannah beginning: "We have received the following agreeable intelligence from Augusta: 'On the morning of the 14th inst. about nine o'clock information was received that the Americans were at hand..." (see). Further on is a report that Congress had ratified the treaty of friendship with France, with the actual document signed in type by: Ben. Franklin, Arthur Lee, and John Adams (see).
Another page begins with: "Last night, when alone, and at a dead hour, the tragical fate of Major Andre happened to engross my thoughts..." following by his inspiration to write a poem to his member  taking over half the page. A small hole in this poem loses about six words (see).
The back page has further news from the South, including: "...confirming the report of an action having happened with a large party of the rebels at the extremity of that province in which the Royalist gained a complete victory; a great number of prisoners were taken..." with more (see) and noting several traitors were hanged.
Eight pages, lightly inked spot to the front page, and the small hole as noted above, otherwise good. Measures 8 1/2 by 11 1/4 inches.
