January 01, 1800

COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, January 1, 1800  An extremely historic issue, and one which we are not often able to offer: the funeral of George Washington.
The borders of all four pages are black bordered for the death of Washington, with the front page having a nice article headed: "Washington's Funeral" and which includes a engraving of his coffin: rarely found in period newspapers (see). The article begins: "On Wednesday last the mortal part of Washington the great--the father of his country and the friend of man, was consigned to the tomb, with solemn honors and funeral pomp..." with much more (see). This is followed by another report which includes the engraving of his coffin, showing the location of the various pall bearers and additional details on the funeral procession.
The front page has additional reports and notes concerning the life & funeral of Washington, with all of page 2 taken up with: "Respectful Testimonials sacred to George Washington, Deceased" (see for portions). And some carry over to page 3 as well. The back page is entirely taken up with advertisements.
\Four pages, irregular at the spine margin, a 2 by 2 1/2 inch piece missing from the bottom right corner of the front leaf causes some loss of text, various light damp staining and foxing, some minor tears at the margins.
A great opportunity with a wealth of reporting on the funeral of America's first President.
