THE LIBERATOR, Boston, December 11, 1863

* "Colored" troops in the Civil War

This is the famous anti-slavery newspaper by famed abolitionist publisher William Lloyd Garrison. The masthead features two engravings, one of a slave auction and the other showing slaves being emancipated (see).

Page three features a report titled: "The Arrival of Colored Troops" which is an interesting article with some candid comments. In general this is a very positive article on the introduction of African-American soldiers in the Civil War. See the photos for the full text. Fascinating reading.

Also in this issue is: "An Order From General Butler In Regard to Colored Troops" which begins: "General Butler has issued a lengthy order relative to colored troops, the effect of which is to call upon male negroes to fight for the freedom of their race..." with more (see). There is anothre report: "Losses in the Nine Months' Regiments" which provides some statistics (see).

Great to have this content in an anti-slavery newspaper.

Complete in four pages with an archival mend to the front page and also a small piece missing at the top, near the masthead, which does cause some text loss, otherwise in good condition. See photos for details.
