THE LIBERATOR, Boston, April 17, 1863 This is the famous anti-slavery newspaper by famed abolitionist publisher William Lloyd Garrison. The masthead features two engravings, one of a slave auction and the other showing slaves being emancipated (see).
Page one contains an interesting response to a recent proclamation by Abraham Lincoln for a day of fasting and prayer, also reporting on a similar Proclamation by Jefferson Davis. The ftpg. also has a letter signed in type: Jefferson Davis, mentioning in part: "...The hardships which our slaves endure in consequence of the war are scarcely greater than those to which they have been accustomed. Out slaves get everything they use at the hands of their masters..." with more (see).
Page three has a report on a group of negro soldiers from Elmira, New York heading off to volunteer in Massachusetts. Could these been additional recruits for the Massachusetts 54th Regiment? There is no way to know for certain... but the timing makes it a possibility.
Page 3 has an appeal by Elizabeth Cady Stanton (famed abolitionist and leader of the woman's suffrage movement) and an announcement concerning a speaking engagement by Anne E. Dickinson (first woman to speak formally on the floor of the U.S. Congress).
Complete in four pages, a small hole (archivally mended as best as possible) is present which goes through the entire issue (see photo), otherwise in good condition.
