THE LIBERATOR, Boston, March 20, 1863  This is the famous anti-slavery newspaper by famed abolitionist publisher William Lloyd Garrison. The masthead features two engravings, one of a slave auction and the other showing slaves being emancipated (see).
This issue contains a page 3 report concerning the great value of "Negro Soldiers" as the article is headed, being a letter from an officer of the Massachusetts Cavalry at Beaufort, S.C., beginning: "I consider the enlistment of negroes as soldiers a complete success...I have visited their camp three or four times & witnessed their drill...they display as great efficiency in drill as any of the white regiments on the island..." with many more positive comments (see).
Identifying this report as the famous Massachusetts 54th Regiment of "colored" soldiers is the article: "The Colored Regiment at Readville" (history tells us Readville is where the Mass. 54th was organized) and the article includes: "...The Colored Regiment at Readville now numbers nearly three hundred men...The officers thus far nominated are Col. Shaw...", being the famous Col. Robert Shaw who would die commanding the African-American soldiers at the battle of Fort Wagner (see). This article is followed by another nice item headed: "The Expedition of Negro Soldiers Into the Interior of Rebeldom" which has some positive comments on the African-American soldiers as well (see).
