This is the famous anti-slavery newspaper by famed abolitionist publisher William Lloyd Garrison. The masthead features two engravings, one of a slave auction and the other showing slaves being emancipated (see).
This issue contains a page 3 report of special significance concerning the Massachusetts 54th. The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment saw extensive federal service in the Union Army during the Civil War, being one of the first official black units in the United States military. The regiment was authorized in March, 1863, by the governor of Massachusetts, John A. Andrew, and was commanded by Colonel Robert Shaw. In 1989 a movie was made on this regiment, titled "Glory", starring Matthew Broderick.
As shown in the photos, this issue has an article titled: "Enrollment of Free Men of Color" with the various details noted, with a few detailing noting: "...every able-bodied free male person of African descent between 18 and 45, for military service, to be paid like white volunteers..." (see)
It was a result of this federal bill that the Massachusetts 54th regiment of Black soldiers would be created. Terrific to have this historic report in this famous anti-slavery newspaper.
