DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Richmond, Virginia, Dec. 27, 1864 Not just a Confederate newspaper, but one from the capital of the Confederacy and from quite late in the war.
The front page includes: "The War News" with various items including subheads: "From Georgia" "Southwestern Virginia" and "Colonel Mosby". Also: "City Intelligence" "The Raid On Pollard" "From Wilmington" and other items. Over half of the page is taken up with ads including 3 reward ads (see images).
The back page has an editorial which tries to put a positive spin on a very significant loss for the South: the fall of Savannah. The text begins: "The evacuation of Savannah, accomplished without loss of men, artillery or stores, will do the Confederacy no harm. It is painful to learn that the enemy has occupied any new piece of territory...and Savannah is a considerable city full of rich people, some of whom, we are sorry to hear, have always been Yankees; but in all the South there is not...Savannah has not been a port for years...Savannah is not a manufacturing town..." with more (see). Also some talk of a Christmas present from President Davis.
The back page also has reports from the: "Confederate States Congress and "Latest News from the North" with subheads: "From Sherman's Aramy" "Sherman's March Through Georgia" "The Loss in Assaulting Fort McAllister" "General Sherman's Observations on the Situation" "Sherman Declares He is Going North Through South Carolina" "From Grant's Army" and even more.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a one column masthead, typical late in the war as every effort was made to conserve newsprint and spare for news and ads. Minor margin loss at the bottom just touches some letters but causes no loss (see images), with some blank margin tears.
