* Very early report on the Mormons
Within this issue is a rather brief article with a small head: "Mormonism", the full report reading: "Two preachers of this sect have lately visited Boston, and soon made 15 converts to their strange doctrines--some of whom are respectable persons--5 also had joined at Lynn. Certain of these converts have cast considerable sums of money into the stock, and all were about to depart for the 'promised land', in Jackson county, Missouri--the precious spot having been lately discovered." (see ). This is one of the earliest mentions of the Mormons we have seen in a newspaper, and quite rare as such.
Near the back of the issue are 4 pages of charts reporting the results of the 1830 census (see photos for one of the pages).
Among other reports in this issue are: "Bank of the United States" "Relics of the Revolution" "West Indies" references the slave insurrection in Jamaica and "Southern Prejudices"
Complete in 16 pages, measures about 6 1/2 by 10 inches in nice condition save for minor spine wear.
This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia: "Niles edited and published the Weekly Register until 1836, making it into one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States and himself into one of the most influential journalists of his day. Devoted primarily to politics, Niles' Weekly Register is considered an important source for the history of the period."
