December 07, 1864
THE CRISIS, Columbus, Ohio, Dec. 7, 1864  Described as "The Hottest Rebel Sheet to be found in the North or the South", this newspaper opposed the war and attracted the hatred of the Republicans and the Lincoln administration. It insisted that slavery could not be prohibited by law. So obnoxious was this paper to Unionists that it was denied circulation in some cities. In 1863 the press was raided by a hateful mob.
There is considerable coverage on the Civil War. The front page has: "The Confederate Prisoners" "Richmond to Be Destroyed--This Time, Sure" "Distress in Missouri" & more. Page 2 has a lengthy letter signed by Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens. Also: "The Confederate Congress".
Others pages have: "From The South--Lincoln's Election in Lee's Army" "An Advocate for Arming Slaves" "The Seizure of the Florida" "Gen. Sherman's Orders for the March" which is signed by him in type: Major Gen. W. T. Sherman. Also: "Sherman's Expedition" "Negro Mutiny in Memphis" "The War" "The War In Kentucky" "The Valley Of the Shadow of Death--The War in the Shenandoah..." and more.
Eight pages, tiny binding holes at the spine margin, terrific condition.
