THE CIRCULAR, Oneida, New York, May 12, 1859 This is an uncommon periodical published by the Oneida Community, a Utopian commune founded by John Humphrey Noyes in 1848 in Oneida. The community believed that Jesus Christ had already returned in the year 70, making it possible for them to bring about Christ's millennial kingdom themselves, and be free of sin and perfect in this world, not just heaven.
Over half a column on page 3 is headed: "Disturbances in Utah", portions of which include: "...the Mormons as again in a state of great excitement...strenuously endeavoring to procure indictments against persons suspected of having been participants in the murder of the emigrants at Mountain Meadows...Among those suspected were several of the leading men of the Mormon Church...that the ends of justice were likely to be interfered with by the Mormons...that the Grand Jury, composed entirely of Mormons, has been dismissed..." with much more (see). A nice article concerning accusations against the Mormons for their role in the infamous Mountain Meadows Massacre.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, great condition.
