THE ILLUSTRATED AMERICAN, New York, September 9, 1898
* Bizarre flying contraption
* Pre airplane photo
Within this issue is a very curious article, with two photos, titled: "A New Flying Machine That Flies" with the photos showing an almost comical contraption which unfolds to look much like a large bat with propellers. The article tells about this interesting machine, but does note that: "...there are a large number of details that the inventor has kept strictly to himself...".
The article ends with an interestingly prophetic statement: "...It is impossible to imagine without terror the day when these mechanical birds, these flying apparitions, will be able to rain upon armies , hostile towns and escalading parties most deadly and most destructive explosives...". How true this would become.
