Billy the Kid is shot dead...
Item # 565252
July 19, 1881
THE SCRANTON REPUBLICAN, Pennsylvania, July 19, 1881 The front page has a small report yet with its own heading worded just as any collector would want: " 'Billy The Kid' Killed", and with the report giving the basic facts: " 'Billy the Kid' the notorious murderer and outlaw has been surprised and killed by the Sheriff of Lincoln county. Kid was a native of New York city. His real name is McCarthey."
Not far beneath it is a brief report concerning the Rock Island Railroad robbery committed by Jesse James & his gang, headed: "Escape Of The Train Robbers" and reading: "The Sheriff's posse searching for the train robbers returned without capturing any, or even getting on the trail." (see)
Great to have mention of, or reference two, the two most notable Western outlaws on the front page of the same newspaper. Complete in 4 pages and in great condition.
The front page has some reports on the status of President Garfield, who was shot not long previous to this date (see).
Four pages and rejoined at the spine. In very good condition unlike many of the newspapers from this period which tend be pulpish and brittle.
