THE DAILY JOURNAL, Wilmington, North Carolina, July 5, 1861
* Civil War from the Southern point of view

Page 2 war reports include: "The Engagement Near Winchester, Va.", "Reported Program Of Gen. Scott" & "Skirmish Near Alexandria". Page 2 also has an interesting letter from the Secretary of War of the Confederate States to "Newspaper Correspondents" in which he describes himself as "an uncompromising advocate of an unshackled press" but then says: "...I have thought it proper, under existing circumstances, to make an appeal to you to forbear from the transmission and publication of such intelligence as might be detrimental to the great cause in which we all feel so deep an interest..." & more, signed in type: L. P. Walker.
Also on pg. 2 is a nice 4 1/2 by 2 3/4 inch business ad announcing the arrival of "Colt's Army And Navy Pistols" which includes a nice engraving of one of the pistols.
On page 3 under "Important From The Seat Of War!" is a report stating that: "Tennessee has been announced a member of the Southern Confederacy, by the proclamation of President Davis, according to act of Congress."
Other war news in this column as well. In very good condition.4 pages.
