December 18, 1903
THE BETHLEHEM TIMES, Pennsylvania, December 18, 1903  On page 2 at the top of the first column is a somewhat inconspicuous report about the famous and historic flight of the Wright Brothers, with a small, two line head: "A Successful Trial Of A Flying Machine" & a two line subhead: "Travels Three Miles, Then Descends at Spot Selected by Navigator".
The report, datelined "Norfolk, Va. Dec. 18", is from the Associated Press, the first paragraph reading: "A Successful trial of a flying machine was made yesterday near Kitty Hawk, N. C. by Wilbur and Orville Wright, of Dayton, O. The machine flew for three miles in the face of a wind blowing at the...velocity of 21 miles an hour and then gracefully descended to earth at the spot selected by the man in the navigator's car as a suitable landing place. The machine has no balloon attachment, but gets its force from propellers worked by a small engine."
The report continues with details about the pre-flight preparations and the take-off, plus there is a description of the "flying machine" (see).
Complete in 8 pages, a bit pulpish with minor wear at the margins, some archival mends, none in the report. A small chip to the left blank margin of the report does not touch any text.
Reports about the historic flight at Kitty Hawk are rather uncommon and are usually quite brief, unlike this report which has three paragraphs and some nice details. One of the most significant events of the 20th century.
