Item # 557043

March 26, 1804

INDEPENDENT CHRONICLE, Boston, Massachusetts, March 26, 1804  This title has one of the nicest mastheads from the early 19th century featuring an engraving that has a variation of the Great Seal and an Indian, plus a banner inscribed with the Massachusetts state motto: "Ense Petit Placidam Sub Liberate Quietem" ('By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty').
In the dateline is: "'Peace, Commerce, and honest Friendship, with all Nations--entangling Alliances, with none.'---Jefferson", being a line from Thomas Jefferson's first inaugural address.
News of the day with some advertisements. Traces of foxing, otherwise in generally nice condition.
